Application of Arbitrary-Order Hilbert Spectral Analysis to Passive Scalar Turbulence

چکیده
In previous work [Huang et al., PRE 82, 26319, 2010], we found that the passive scalar turbulence field maybe less intermittent than what we believed before. Here we apply the same method, namely arbitrary-order Hilbert spectral analysis, to a passive scalar (temperature) time series with a Taylor’s microscale Reynolds number Reλ ' 3000. We find that with increasing Reynolds number, the discrepancy of scaling exponents between Hilbert ξθ(q) and Kolmogorov-Obukhov-Corrsin (KOC) theory is increasing, and consequently the discrepancy between Hilbert and structure function could disappear at infinite Reynolds number.

Simulation of Low Reynolds Number Isotropic Turbulence Including the Passive Scalar
Full simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence containing a homogeneous passive scalar were made at low Reynolds numbers and various Prandtl numbers. The results show that the spectral behavior of the two fields are quite similar; both fields decay as power-law functions of time. However. the decay exponent is quite dependent on both the Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The decay exponent of...
متن کاملA contribution to approximate analytical evaluation of Fourier series via an Applied Analysis standpoint; an application in turbulence spectrum of eddies
In the present paper, we shall attempt to make a contribution to approximate analytical evaluation of the harmonic decomposition of an arbitrary continuous function. The basic assumption is that the class of functions that we investigate here, except the verification of Dirichlet's principles, is concurrently able to be expanded in Taylor's representation, over a particular interval of their do...

The passive scalars in the decaying compressible turbulence with the initial Reynolds number (defined by Taylor scale and RMS velocity) Re=72, the initial turbulent Mach numbers (defined by RMS velocity and mean sound speed) Mt=0.2-0.9, and the Schmidt numbers of passive scalar Sc=2-10 are numerically simulated by using a 7 order upwind difference scheme and 8 order group velocity control schem...
متن کاملMixing in modulated turbulence. Analytical results
Recent numerical results show that if a scalar is mixed by periodically forced turbulence, the average mixing rate is directly affected for forcing frequencies small compared to the integral turbulence frequency. We elucidate this by an analytical study using simple turbulence models for spectral transfer. Adding a large amplitude modulation to the forcing of the velocity field enhances the ene...
متن کاملNumerical evidence of universal scaling for the scalar variance spectrum in forced homogeneous turbulence
In this letter, the spectrum of high Schmidt number passive scalar in forced homogeneous isotropic turbulence is studied through direct numerical simulations. A hybrid spectral-particle method is used with a finer resolution of the scalar than of the momentum and large time-steps. This approach enables to perform a systematic analysis over a wide range of Schmidt numbers. Our results recover th...
